Another ABS Thread

. . sorry the other Volvo threads are closed

I recently had my 2005 780 singled, and, of course, have an ABS fault light on the dash, and had error messages for the missing two sensors and two modulator valves.  My truck came with a 6S/6M Meritor system without ESC and has a frame mounted ECU.  After a lot of researching, it seemed that my best solution was to bite the bullet and purchase the needed Wabco controller (Via Volvo) and eat the expensive charge.

Then I happened to find this auction, well it really isn't an auction as it is just a "but it now" item on eBay.  Search eBay for item 370278816099, or search for Wabco S4461062010.

After talking a few times with the Wabco help desk, they confirmed that this is the part I needed as long as I didn't have ESC, and I had a frame mounted ECU.

Wabco wouldn't recommend that I do this myself, "tampering with safety features", Blah Blah Blah . . .

I do not have the ability to jury rig in place the extra sensors and modulators here in my winter home at Retama, but 400 bucks won't hurt as badly as $1000-$1200 Volvo was quoting.

But I will report back in this thread how it works out for me, as I did not get a clear answer from Volvo if I will still need further program changes in the truck ECU after swapping out the ABS ECU.

By rights it needs the manual function test (I forget the official term) done after a major surgery, so since the computer is already hooked up it shouldn't be too much trouble to program in whatever else is needed at the same time.

Dang, they have a whole dang medium duty DPF for $200 on there.   That's only like an $11,000 savings

UPDATE!
Just installed the 4S/4M controller from these guys, and my ABS light is now off!

I have not been to Volvo for any programming (yet) but I do have one minor issue that appeared after singling, and still is not functioning.

The cruise control is still not working.  It worked fine before singling, and I "assumed" that it was not working due to the ABS fault.

Still need to get it over to Volvo to get connected (and possibly reset) to see what is up with the cruise control.

But right now, I am happy with my 399 dollar purchase of this ABS controller.

Also Kevin @ K and S LLC says he Has many more of these 4S/4M units in stock (plus he also has an assortment of Jakes in stock)

This may be known, but are you holding the brake for four seconds before engaging the tranny and then when over 30 mph engaging the cruise control ???

The Volvo directions should be on the back of the visor.  The two trucks I singled were Meritor and they just needed the module hooked up and we cleaned the sensors just for precaution, and had no trouble getting ABS

Jim,
ABS is now working.

No stickers on the truck visors, but I did know about the 4 second thing, just took it out in the dark for another test, and cruise is not working.  I have a couple of other instrument cluster errors, so it is time to have it looked at by the Stealer!!

Plus I would like to have the 65 MPH speed governor removed. (not that I expect to go over 65 often, but I think I should be able too!)

Doug,
What is ESC?  I have TCS, or Traction Control System, but I have never heard of ESC.

Electronic Spark Control?

LOL!
I could be wrong, but I think it is Electronic Stability Control.

If X1 (black) and X2 (green connectors) on your ABS controller have 18 pins, you have ESC. 12 Pins on these connectors and you don't have ESC

ESC, TCS, ABS, ECU, no wonder we need a cheat sheet!  I need an ABS ECU for my 2000 770 that has been singled, but it needs the TCS version.  Anybody know what the part number for that one is?  I found one listed on eBay that has a little different number than the one you got.

OK,
I have TCS on my rig too, but I thought the TCS button only worked the centrifugal clutch on my (removed) power divider.

Time to check the manual again

TCS uses the ABS brake modulators to provide a poor mans limited slip rear end.  It locks the spinning wheel to transfer power to the wheel that is not moving.

From what I can tell we need the S446 106 2030 instead of the S446 106 2010.  What I don't know is if the 2010 will work.  I really don't need the TCS but without the proper ECU the whole thing might not work right.  I don't know.  Maybe someone who understands these things will chime in.

Never mind, nothing to do with the power diverter, just a button to temporarily "ignore" the signals from the wheel proximity switch's (speed sensors) during wheel slippage from acceleration, not brakes

Right.  When you flip the TCS switch to the "On" position it disables TCS.  Kind of backwards IMO.  Basically TCS is on all the time unless you flip the disable switch on.

Mmm. Now it is my turn to struggle with this issue.  I picked up the singled truck on Friday, and, as predicted, had no ABS. Initially, I thought I could run the "reconfiguration" procedure as described at the back of the manual.  However, it now appears to me that the "reconfiguration" procedure can cope with the presence/absence of certain features like ATC, but not with the presence/absence of ABS valves and sensors.

I would love to learn that my 6S/6M Meritor-Wabco 446 106 209 0 ECU can be reconfigured to be a 4S/4M like the Meritor-Wabco 446 106 203 0, but I fear that it cannot.

The 446 106 201 0 mentioned a few posts earlier appears to indeed be a 4S/4M unit, but without "PLC" and "ATC".  I'm not sure that "PLC" is important, because I think it has something to do with communicating with the trailer's ABC.  Since my trailer doesn't have an ECU for ABS, I don't think I need PLC.  But "ATC" is another matter.  It may well be required for cruise control for all I know.

Oddly, Meritor Wabco apparently told my mechanic that I needed a 446 106 200 7. I've not been able to find this part, and I think it might be a mistake.

Questions for those who've walked here before:

1) Can the ECU really be reconfigured/reprogrammed from a 6S/6M to a 4S/4M?  Some threads seem to imply so, but I've not been able to find reference to it in a manual anywhere.

2) My DID tells me that my brake ECU's part number is 446 106 209 0. However, the label on the ECU calls it a 4008500730.  I can't find reference to that part anywhere. Odd.  All input appreciated.

3) Any thoughts about giving up ATC?  I'd rather not give it up, but the best quote so far from Volvo for the replacement ECU is about $1000 (down from list price of $1700, apparently).  The eBay auction at $399 sounds much better, but those units don't have ATC.

4) Any bright ideas about where to find a used 4S/4M with ATC?

Ahh, the dark side

Doubt you will find a used one, but I have a used 6m/6s for sale!! (lol) The guy I bought from on Ebay said he has "lots" of the 4m/4s modules on hand.

I called and spoke at great length to the folks at Meritor/Wabco and reprogramming is not an option.

The only thing that is important is that when your guys moved up the rear axle, they kept the electrical connections for the sensors and power modulators connected to the rear axle.  When you install the 4m/4s the
middle axle wiring is no longer connected to the truck. (I left all my wires in place, just black taped up the ends)

Dan
It took me about 45 minutes to swap out the modules.  Remove the battery fairing, crawl under in between the tank and batteries, look up into the frame crossmember about the transmission, and you will find the ABS module. (it is about 8 inches by 8 inches wide, and about 2 inches deep, black box)  Next, started up the truck, cleared all the old errors, and the ABS light was off!  The next morning after I made the swap, we had a light rain (perfect condition to test the ABS) I did not have the trailer on the truck, so the rear was VERY light, and the ABS worked perfectly. Panic stop at 45 (on an empty road) and I stopped quick and STRAIGHT! not a single brake locked up!  Our trucks are pretty much the same, so I am sure this is where you will find your module located.

In case his auction for these modules is no longer up on Ebay, his company is K & S Trading LLC.  I dealt with Kevin Lockhart.  If you can't find his company, let me know, and I will send you his email address (I don't want to post his email without his permission)
