Comparing Vehicle Registration Fees in SD, TX, FL and NC

I just got my renewal cards from the DMV for CLifford and DakotR.  In NC, the Volvo is $361 for 12 months and the KOTR is $46.  I am wondering what fees others with 21,000# GVWR 5th wheels are paying in South Dakota, Texas or Florida?  I know this is only part of the equation since NC also has a personal property tax which makes totals a bit more complex but as we are only months away from leaving NC, I am considering moving my registration before we take off and maybe saving a few bucks for the year.

Anyone have any comparable?  Clifford is a 2000 Volvo 770. DakotR is a 1999 40' King of the Road Crown Marquis (top of the line for that year).  I am just looking for ballpark figures.

Emery,
I'll pull my registration out of the truck later (its dark now!) and give you a report of what it is in Custer, SD.  We have been registered there for OVER 10 years.
Mike

(later) My 2001 Volvo 770 was $102.00 for a 22 ton non-commercial license and the 2005 Teton 45' Reliance was $188.00.  Hope that helps.

My registration is about the same as Mike's.  Like Mike I have mine registered for the total down the road weight with the trailer and the car.  Some don't and that makes theirs cheaper.  The other thing in favor of SD is the cost of insurance.  I found it to be much cheaper there.

In TX we pay 147.70 for the 21,600 lb. Royals International and 124.40 for the truck.  I forget what weight I put on the truck.  But more than enough for my use.

It is safe to assume (we all know about assuming) that your truck is classified as a RV as opposed to a truck?  My little WIA is twice that here in Williamson County, TX classed as a 16K truck

I just paid mine and it was 181.00 for the Volvo and I think 350.00 for my 5th wheel and this is in California.

5er is $180.00 for Permanent plates here in MT, so the truck is are all we pay for.  I think the FL112 was $167.00

Good point - my truck is really a MH.  But I don't remember if that made any difference, since it was done by weight.....

Actually Jack it does matter.  Last year I plated my 2004 Pete 387 as non-commercial truck.  For that they go off the GVWR for fees.  The nice folks in Livingston fudged the weights to get my fees down for me and said the GVWR was 25K instead of 48K.  At that the renewal as a truck this year is $290.  As a Motor Home it is $133.  I am actually heading down to change the registration type today.  For my 2008 39' 5er I pay $166.50 in Texas.

I have my 2001 Volvo registered in Crestview, FL for $91.10 state, $3.00 County, $100.00 initial registration which is a one time fee.  The 2007 Mobile Suite is $37.75 per year.  Insurance is where I saved most with Progressive.  I checked in TX, SD. and FL. I was already registered in MS.

Jefferson County Florida:
Moby, 2001 Volvo 610 motorhome = $63.60; Mobette, 2005 Mobile Suites = $36.50

When registered in AL, it was about $1200 for Moby because they tax by weight of the truck and load.

We were registered in Florida 14 years ago when we first started full timing, as that is where we retired from and I enjoyed the low registration fee's.

However watch out for their intangible tax, which taxes you for all money you have in stocks, bonds and other stock market investments.  It is a killer, it kept getting higher and higher.  I checked out and moved to South Dakota.  Watch out for it......FWIW

My truck is registered in Texas for 20,000 lbs. even though its GVWR is 31,000 lbs.  That is the least weight they would register my truck for based on its GVWR.  If you register your truck as a truck like mine the fees are based on weight.  My cost is $210 a year.

My fiver is registered for 17K and the cost is $110 per year.

Hey Mike, an update on Florida Intangible Tax: It was repealed in 2007 and is no longer collected on personal investments like stocks and bonds.

Come on back!!!!

Don't forget NC's personal property tax... I'm sure it would be $$$ on a HDT.

My residence is SD.  I called ND and said that my trailer spends more time in ND.  They said no problem.  It registered in ND with the county as "out of state."  The yearly fee is $20.

BTW since it's my primary residence, it's also "Exempt from Judgment."  No creditor can attach the trailer and I can only lose the trailer if I don't pay the $20.

It was the combination of the low fee and the "Exempt from Judgment" that caused my switch.  The '93 Buick that I inherited is registered in SD and is not protected from creditors.

Wow!  that is a great price and some protection, too.  Did you ask for that exemption or did they volunteer it or is it just standard practice?

All travel trailers regardless of type, weight, or value cost $20/year.

The protection is for a trailer that is a primary residence.  It's "absolutely exempt from judgment" like a church pew, family pictures or clothes.

Downside: Fulltimer's insurance is extremely expensive if a person doesn't own a truck.  But you don't need liability insurance on the trailer if it's exempt from judgment and you don't own anything else.  Of course anyone owning an HDTV should have good liability insurance.

Our trailer cost us $285.00 in 2005 brand new.  The tags are permanent so nothing since then.  The Volvo cost us $102.00 the last couple years.  We are registered in Montana.  Oh and I paid no sales tax on the truck, trailer and my BMW motorcycle.
