Removal of Vinyl Graphics

Removal of Vinyl Graphics

8/1/2015

If your new truck came with Company Logo's, Vinyl Graphics or adhesive backed DOT Numbers that you need to remove then here's a good article to read about Removing Graphics with Vinyl Off 10-4.

Forum Threads

cadonnelly (Chuck) had numerous graphics to remove on his new 770 and he said the product worked well, however, in the long run he switched to using a Heat Gun to save time since he had So Many graphics, wording and DOT numbers to remove.

The "Mobile Suites" and big "D" on my 5er were peeling so I ordered new from DRV.  The "Mobile Suites" lettering came off easily with a hair dryer and plastic putty knife.  Not so the big "D".  Could not even make a dent even after switching to my heat gun.  Tried some Rustoleum Decal Remover from Autozone--no luck.  Was gonna order some of the Vinyl Off-10/4 that was featured in the Resource Guide but kind of leery since the other remover did absolutely nothing.  May just have to go to a razor blade but don't want to damage my cap.  The "D" seems to be a different "thicker" material than the vinyl lettering.  Any suggestions or do you think the Vinyl Off might do the trick?

3M Decal Remover

For a real challenge - try to remove the RED / WHITE reflective tape (IF anyone succeeds, please let me know how) Even called 3M (no response)

Thanks Bill. BTW did you get my e-mail with the pictures and "legend" for my fuse panel?

I got some but the fuse numbers were missing and part of the legend.  Still need a VIN number.  Gmail ate some of the post - I got something but ??????? looked like a pixelated mess.  One of those indecent shots on a police show.  (I have no clue what happened) something corrupted it)

Ok, will have my truck in a few weeks.  Will get you some good pics of fuse box, legend, and VIN and will e-mail you before I try anything.  Like Jack's idea of separate box.

You know the ones I'm talking about. The red /white DOT reflecters.  Fuel proof, acetone, WD 40, decal remover, heat gun (paint got little brown) 3M scrubber / sanding pads (green, marroon, white), Goo Gone, industrial strength delimone, paint stripper.

With any luck I wont need my 3" ice chipper till November, where do you want it sent too?

I also have a 4" masons chisel that I had to buy to chip the concrete in front of my new 3000 dollar aluminum door at the office, damn heaving concrete!

If the chisel and Ice scraper wont do it, I'm sure JW still has an air chipper he'll rent out.

Good luck, I'd say heat gun, and sharp scraper, and lots of time.

Heat gun and a PLASTIC scraper.  Lot's and lot's of plastic scrapers.

We used to use a razor blade and laquer thinner to remove stripes in the paint shop.  Now we now use the Astro Pneumatic 400E eraser wheel you can get at your local paint supply place for about $10-$12.  3M also makes them but whatever you use they are called eraser wheels.  http://www.astrotool...x?toolsnum=400E

You can just use it in a drill and is best to use it at a slower speed.  Especially on plastic like a bumper but fiberglass will be fine.  It will also remove the DOT reflective tape.

If it's a thicker and raised decal then fish line wrapped around your two index fingers and used in a sawing motion does a good job getting them off, and name or body names, then use the goo off's to get rid of the left over adhesive.

Not sure how this helps, but I read this forum because you guys are so inventive.....

The company I worked for built all those stainless steel UPS drop boxes.  Remember when they were red?  Some years ago all were rebranded and the red decals had to come off.  We tried everything, including solvents, flame, mechanical with very poor results.  Finally hit on a new idea.  Used dry ice chips in a sand blaster.  Took it right off with no substrate damage.  When the adhesive gets really cold it fractures with mechanical pressure.  Then just a quick wipe with solvent for any remaining adhesive.

So maybe there is some combination of cold and physical effort that could work.  Dry ice is easy to get.  How to use it, let your imagination be your guide.  This is just a hint.

Good point John - We used to do that in the plants on robots and machinery.  Hadn't thought of the cold.

Keep the ideas coming guys, I've tried all of the tricks that I have used in the past to remove the United Van Lines decals from my trailer.  The heat gun and scraper seam to work the best, but it is slow because the aluminum skin disapates the heat so well.  The DA was pretty much useless after 30 seconds because the pad clogged with stuff.  Once I have the decal off the adhesive is a piece of cake with adhesive remover and a shot of brake cleaner.

Folks, thanks for all the good suggestions.  Got the last bit done with an eraser wheel and my drill.  Can't say enough good about Goo Gone.  Took all the adhesive off without a hitch.  Got my new decals on and am ready for the East Coast Rally.

Lacquer thinner is the BEST for removing adhesive, put it on a rag and wipe easily away....
