Autoshift Problem

I have a noise coming from what I think is the tranny when the truck is turned off, intermittent problem.  It goes on for a min or so.  Haven't been able to go under and confirm yet.  It sounds just like the XY shifter is searching for a gear, at least that's what I would expect that to sound like..... An electrical/mechanical sound like ratcheting and clicking.  I don't think its not air related, I had no air in the system once and it did it.  Truck is a 01 770 with VED12 and Gen 1 A/S.

Some history as well, last trip after 7 hrs. on the highway was leaving a stop light and it hunted for gears 3,4 and 5.  Arrows on the display and engine revved up and down.  Had to stop and start out again, did it one more time then after a stop and off, was ok.  The noise was there a couple of trips before this happened.

No shifting issues now, but still the noise.  Also had the tranny cooler fail internally and mixed coolant and tranny oil. This happened on the same trip.  I replaced cooler and flushed tranny and coolant system.  All new fluids now.  Still have the noise.  Its not every time its shut down, but sometimes.

Plan to get into it this weekend and pull all the connectors and clean and put dielectric on them, and check the XY shifter.  Wonder if anyone else had this noise before?  What did you find was the cause?

The Autoshift has a shutdown procedure that it goes through when you turn the key off.  Mine does it every time and that's normal.  It sounds just like you described.  In the past, I've had to replace both the XY Shifter and the TCM.  Not cheap, but it has never left me stranded.

Ray is correct, the clicking noise is normal.  Ours does it too.  Also after about 5 to 15 minutes after shutting the truck off it makes a little air pssst sound.  No idea what that is, but figure it's normal since it has done this since we have owned it.

Thanks for the info.  The noise I have is not the normal sounds I have always had at shutdown.  It continues for a few minutes when it happens.

Is that the XY shifter?  Or is there another one?
